Our Program
Every July since 1980, PLAA has been providing children with a wonderful arts experience, comprised of a morning visual arts & music session and an afternoon drama session. Children may choose to participate in one or both sessions. Each session is three hours long and encompasses a variety of projects and activities. Who May Attend Our Morning Session is open to rising Kindergarten through 8th grade students. Our Afternoon Drama Session is designed for rising 2nd through 9th graders. Because the program involves reading scripts and memorizing lines, all families are encouraged to consider whether their child feels confident reading independently before enrolling. Younger students may be considered if they are strong readers and comfortable with memorization. For more information contact Ella Tyler, Program Director at [email protected]. The Experience The Point Loma Arts Academy is known for its distinctive approach to arts education. Our program offers a rich and diverse arts experience, engaging campers in everything from painting, pottery, and printmaking, to singing, sculpture, songwriting, and multi-medium art. We value process over product, teaching professional technique and foundational skills while leaving room for expression, experimentation, and play. Each summer unfolds around a shared theme that weaves through visual art, music, and theater, turning the entire camp into one big creative story. Storytelling is at the heart of what we do. Rather than creating projects in isolation, campers become part of a larger artistic journey, exploring ideas across disciplines and discovering how the arts overlap and connect. Music is a particularly special part of our program. Throughout the summer, campers learn and rehearse songs that they perform on our beloved “Final Night”, a celebration where family, friends, and community members gather to enjoy a cumulative musical performance and art display. Our musical repertoire is heavily influenced by folk music and classic rock ‘n’ roll to engage all generations. We are passionate about bringing families together through music, creating opportunities for special memories to be made on Final Night and long after students leave camp, through our song selection. To make it even more unforgettable, students perform alongside a live professional band with full sound equipment, giving them the rare opportunity to experience what it feels like to be supported by career musicians while learning the pride, preparation, and professionalism required in performance arts. What truly sets PLAA apart though, is our community. Every summer feels like a big family reunion. Families return year after year, some even generation after generation! Many of our staff members grew up here as campers as well, and they’re still close with friends they met at PLAA all those years ago. We intentionally create a space where friendships blossom, mentors matter, and everyone feels like they belong. |
